About Leela Payne
Leela Payne is originally from Long Island, New York and currently resides in Silver Spring, Maryland. She has been painting since she can remember, surrounded by a family of artists who have always motivated and encouraged her creativity and talent.
Ms. Payne received a bachelor's degree in Art Education from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in Supervision and Leadership of the Arts from Bank Street College and Parsons School of Design in New York City.
Leela has been teaching art in Montgomery County Public Schools for over twenty years. Being an art teacher has allowed her to explore and experiment with a wide variety of materials and learn about the many facets of art.
As a free lance artist she has illustrated children's books for local authors and created large scale projects with in schools, but her true passion is in the process of painting.
"When I paint I feel the process is more important than the product. More often than not, I begin without a plan. I begin the process by covering the canvas with colors and textures. Along with the traditional paint brush, I use non-conventional tools to apply the paint to the canvas. (Including nail brushes, tooth brushes, bubble wrap, printers brayers and anything that may make an interesting texture.) I drip, scrub, rub the paint on, spinning and turning the canvas until the colors and textures begin to reveal their forms and subject matter. The painting first guides me. Then I guide it. Washes upon washes, layers upon layers, pushing and pulling of shapes in and out until I see an image that feels right. As I go through various actions I work through the art process, an image may sometimes disappear only to subconsciously bring about something that is even better than the first. I like to call it painting from the "inside-out"
